Chopping Mall
With a working title of Killer Robots, Chopping Mall brings some sci-fi terror to your Halloween season. Some young adults decide to stay late and have a party in the mall they work in. As with most parties, there are some crashers. This time, the crashers are malfunctioning security robots and they are out for the kill. Lots of action, some creative kills of both the humans and the robots, and a small part for beloved character actor Dick Miller. You’ll have some fun this Halloween with Chopping Mall.

House of 1000 Corpses
The feature film debut of director/creator Rob Zombie. House of 1000 Corpses gives you a glimpse into the Halloween celebrations at the Firefly household. When a group of travelers driving across the country researching for their book learns the local tale of Doctor Satan, they head right out to investigate it, but a flat tire strands them at the house of the bizarre and dangerous Firefly family. There is lots of blood and gore, a great soundtrack, and memorable characters including the late Sid Haig’s Captain Spaulding. You will know if this movie is for you before the opening credits even roll.

The Tingler
Some classic horror is a must every year and I have a great one for this year.
Scientist Dr. Warren Chapin is studying the effects of fear on a person and discovers something never before imagined. A creature that manifests itself inside a person when they feel fear. However, it is deadly when removed from its host and can instill intense fear in anyone it gets in its incredibly strong grip. It’s only weakness is the sound of someone screaming. William Castle’s campy classic, The Tingler, starring Vincent Price can at times make your skin crawl and have you wondering if that thing you felt brush against your leg was your imagination or not.

Halloween III
So much argument has come up in recent years about this movie. While I didn’t enjoy it when I was younger (immaturely because it didn’t have Micheal Meyers in it) I have found a new love for the movie as I have gotten older. Set during the Halloween season, This unique and fun film follows Dr. Daniel Challis as he works with Ellie Grimbridge to investigate the odd circumstances around the death of her brother. Their findings lead them to a manufacturing company, said company’s extremely popular Halloween masks, and more deaths. Forget this is connected to a franchise and enjoy the supernatural and strange story and great acting by Tom Atkins.

Return of the Living Dead
Do you enjoy the ‘80s? Do you like zombies? How about rock and roll? Well sit back and enjoy the hell out of Return of the Living Dead. Throwing out the rules established in Night of the Living Dead, Return of the Living Dead makes you jump, laugh, rock out, and have a lot of fun watching a group of punks, and some blue-collar workers try to survive a graveyard filled with smart and fast zombies. Filled with memorable characters, iconic actors, and quotable moments, this zombie film is a must-see for Halloween.

Blacula
Exploitation film of the 1970s Blacula has one of my favorite performances of a Dracula-type character in it. William Marshall is an African prince who is cursed by Dracula with vampirism and imprisoned in a coffin for almost 200 years. The coffin is purchased by and transported to America by two businessmen along with the rest of Dracula’s estate. Once freed and taking his first drink of blood, Prince Mamuwalde falls in love with the apparent reincarnation of his beloved wife. However, he cannot stop the needs of his vampire curse and continues to kill and transform victims into vampires. William Marshall gives what I consider a grand performance in a film with (in my opinion) an unfortunate title. Even if the setting is dated, the story and performances are strong and the film is extremely entertaining.

Night of the Demons
Another movie taking place on Halloween and almost entirely in a funeral home. Angela hosts an exclusive Halloween party at the abandoned Hull House. Deciding that the best thing to do in a house that was the site of multiple murders is to have a seance, The party guests’ presence combined with the seance unleash the evil demons from their slumber in the house and we get a film filled with possessions, gore, music, dancing, and cheesy dialogue. Night of the Demons has become a ritual watch during Halloween at my house.
